Spell Craft for the Season
Magic isn't something that we believe is taught - it's shared; and for us it's rarely performed for another, yet on the occasions it is, it's for those closest to us.
Magic is something that is to be discovered, to explore and to be found, personally.
Often shared from Grandmother to Mother to Daughter or Father to Son and so on...
The Mechanics of Magic
Ours is a nature-based belief and we use the seasons, herbs, colours, candles, the moon and the sun to help with spells to attain our dreams and desires, and those of others.
Think back to childhood birthdays, a cake full of candles, surrounded by friends and family, and love. You were told to blow out the candles and make a wish: that is the foundation of candle magic right there!
Candle magic is one of the simplest forms of spellcasting, and as such, it doesn’t require a lot of fancy ritual or ceremonial tools. In other words, anyone with a candle can cast a spell.
Think back again to when you made a wish before you blew out the candles on your birthday cake. The same idea applies to candle magic, only instead of just hoping for your wish to come true, you're declaring your intent.
As a Hedge Witch works with one foot between the worlds, The Hedge is a powerful metaphor. A space between worlds, Beyond the Hedge is the wisdom of those that have come before us who carry a lantern of light, yet it also holds the spark of who are yet to come..
What Is Magic?
What is Magic?
Magic: it comes from deep within, harnessing all that moves through the cosmos, with grace and heart… Candle Magic is as Old as Flame and Fire itself, it's Woven... Every spell is a journey...
So, what really are magic spells ?
By casting a spell, you are performing a ritual act activating a change or a movement in the path you want your life to go. Be sure you are extremely clear about what you truly want; It’s normal to perform spells at home by creating a sacred space in the beginning. When it comes to your personal space, let it be safe, calm, and full of positive energy.
Approach your magic slowly, becoming present... believe in your spell and the way you perform it. As long as you feel empowered when doing it, the magic will take hold. Yet at the same time have realistic expectations of the result... Let the natural order of things unfold..
If magic spells are not associated with your inner intentions as well as forward action, they are just worthless. In other words, getting help from spells and rituals will bring more opportunities to your life; however, it’s still up to your own decisions to grab those opportunities and achieve what you crave for. Your efforts and patience will be worth the wait if you meet the Magic and the Candle with full presence and gently stay concentrated throughout the casting and your weaving...
Defining your intention
Intentions are very significant in the practice of witchcraft.
What is your intent? What do you want to achieve?
When working with the Spiritual Force, the energy that runs through all things, you have to be as much specific as possible. Don’t be too general, or it will bring confusions to your spell. Moreover, avoid using negative words or sentences. Simple Magic is often the best.. strong solid words and actions.. Writing your own spell will always hold so much power and bring the magic alive..
And how do we get to that? The effective way I have found is to write down your intentions in your journal (dedicate a journal to magic ) or just a piece of paper. When writing it down, you need to describe your desire with clear, meaningful words, helping you understand things you want better. What’s more? Let the words be clear yet of heart.
If you think about it, the birthday candle ritual is based on three key magical principles:
Decide on a goal.
Visualise the end result.
Focus your intent, or will, to manifest that result.
Choosing a Candle
Most magical systems will tell you that the size of your candle really isn't important. In fact, really big candles may be counterproductive. For instance, a candle that takes three days to burn can be highly distracting to someone working a spell that depends on the candle burning all the way down. Yet you can blow that candle out and relight it the next evening with the intent that the spell is still running..
Typically, a short taper candle could work best.
When it comes to colours, you may wish to have a variety on hand for different magical purposes. Work with a sense of intuition and association when it comes to colour..
Using Your Candle in Magic
After you've selected a candle, oil or dress it before burning. This is a method by which you'll establish a psychic link between you and the candle itself. In other words, you're charging the candle with your own energy and personal vibrations and projecting your intent into the wax before you burn it.
To dress a candle, you'll need a natural oil; many practitioners like to use grapeseed because it has no smell. Another option is to use your own blended special candle magic oils remember my Chilli Oil as an oil for clearing the way?
Begin at the top of the candle, and rub the oil down to the middle. Then, begin at the base of the candle and rub the oil up towards the middle, ending where the first coating of oil left off.
In some traditions, the anointing is done just the opposite way; start in the middle and work your way towards the two ends.
If your working calls for herbs to be used as well, roll the oiled candle in the powdered herbs until it is coated all the way around. It's important to remember, however, that a candle is just a tool. It is not inherently magical but a way to create magic using the element of fire to set one's intention into motion. Just as other tools used with magical intent are, candles should be spiritually cleansed before they're included in a spell.
The most basic form of candle magic uses a piece of coloured paper that matches the intent of your candle. Decide what your goal is, and write it on the piece of paper.
Soul Purpose / Career Spell
What you will need
A piece of green paper
A gold pen
Three mint leaves
A teaspoon of dried sage
One gold or silver candle
A candle holder
Incense / burner
Matches or a lighter
What you do:
You should cast this spell on a full moon or waxing moon during the Awakening Tide. Draw a large pentagram in the centre of your piece of paper with your gold pen – a pentagram is a circle with a five-pointed star inside it.
In the centre of the pentagram write the word Purpose/ Career, making sure the star is pointing upwards not downwards.
Around this word, write what kind of purpose/ career you long for – part-time, full-time, in an office or outdoors, how many hours, how much you'd like to be paid, and so on.
Tear up the mint leaves and put these and the dried sage into the pentagram. Place the candle in a holder on top of the herbs and light it.
Say the following words:
"Beloved Freya, Beloved Brigid, Beloved Goddess, hear my plea:
On this night and in this hour a call upon the ancient powers.
With perfect love and perfect trust casting now and cast I must.
As above and so below I make this magick circle grow.
I ask for the power from the divine to add the world's great power to mine.
This circle is cast to create a place between here and there, there and here!
I cast this circle with a ring of three, let universal power flow through me!
I cast ye, I cast ye, I cast ye.
This circle is sealed!
Hail to the guardians of the watch tower of the East I ask thee to keep a gentle watch over my circle this night. I invite the forces of Air - bring your winds of change to this circle here tonight.
Hail to the guardians of the watch tower of the South I ask thee to keep a gentle watch over my circle this night, I invite the forces of Fire - burn away my regrets and shine your gentle rays upon me for growth.
Hail to the guardians of the watch tower of the West - I hail to Elen of The Ways, Wayfinder, Compass , Beloved Elen, Beloved Goddess, you who have guided our Kin and Clan since the beginning, I humbly call upon you now!!
I ask thee to guard my circle here tonight. I invite the forces of Water to wash over me and cleanse me of all negativity and purify my thoughts.
Hail to the guardians of the watch tower of the North, To the Ancestors, I ask thee to keep a gentle watch over my circle this night, I invite the forces of Earth. Let your renewing strength open new paths before me.
I ask that the planets be on my side in my work tonight!!
I am here this night to ask for my tools to be filled with Divine power and for the Goddess's help with my Career path for the future. May I not lose my present job till another is secure. May this spell harm none.
I call to Beloved Brigid, Gentle Goddess of the East and of the South, I invite you here tonight, to my hearth, altar, and home and ask for your help in my endeavours in this circle here this night.
I align myself with You BELOVED Brigid. I align myself with Brigid. I align myself with You beloved mistress of the Hearth, Home and Flame."
Place finger in the salt and water
"I consecrate thee as a tool of magick. Blessed be!
I charge thee with power in the name of the Goddess
So mote it be!"
Repeat for the candle
"I light this candle in the name of Brigid. Beloved goddess, of hearth, home and flame, of smithcraft, I invite her to alchemise this path for me now. Let her great power fill this circle. This is her colour and the colour of my candle and of my spell.
Taking up the item that you wish to consecrate, hold it high in salute and say:
"Gods and Goddess, Lord and Lady, Father and Mother of All life. Here do I present my personal tool(s) for your approval. As it serves me so shall it serve you."
Place the tool on the altar and think back to what you did to personalise it.
Dip your fingers in the salted water and sprinkle both sides of the object. Now, pick it up and hold it in the smoke of the incense, turning it, say:
"May the Sacred Water and the smoke of this Holy flame drive out any impurities in this (name of object) that it be pure and cleansed, ready to serve me and the Gods in any way I desire and they.
So mote it be."
Hold it between the palms of your hands and concentrate all of your energies (your power) into it. Then, say:
"I charge this (name of object) through me, with the wisdom and might of the Goddess. May it serve us well, keeping me from harm and acting in their service, in all things.
So mote it be."
Repeat 2 more times
"I write in a language of old so the divine may hear me. I write of the Career, Purpose and Path, I wish to be fetched for me.
Show it to me - bring it to me!
I burn this paper and the words upon it so that my request will become a reality.
I light this paper with the flame of the Goddess.
As the paper burns and the ashes appear,
bring to me my future career!"
Repeat till the paper is burnt.
"As these ashes are sent into the wind let my spell take form - as these ashes are sent into the wind let my spell take shape - as these ashes are sent into the wind let my spell be reality!
So mote it be!"
Thank all - Freya, Brigid, elements, North, East, South, West
"This circle is open but not broken - let the power of the Goddess fill me, be part of me, give me strength and wisdom so I may fulfil all that is needed of me.
With perfect love and perfect trust, I set this circle free.
Release the power within and let all that I have asked for, Be!
Thank you all, may it be for me, may it be for you, may it be for all of us, a blessing on all our days… Now and Forever more!!"
Attracting a New Home Spell
Home is a powerful word. It brings to mind a place to live and thrive, and most of all, a place that you feel you belong. Even if your experience of home so far has been less than positive, “home” holds a promise of being in a place where you feel supported, secure, and happy.
Home isn’t just a place you find, it’s a place you can create through manifestation, starting right now.
To manifest something in a spiritual sense is to create an energetic pathway.
Whether you feel your current house is dreamy as it is, or perhaps that this place is still somewhere way over the rainbow, these manifestation exercises will allow you to lasso your best future life and manifest it into the here and now!
What you will need:
2 pieces of paper (A4/A5) & something to draw & write with
Colouring pencils/pens, if desired
Bottle of wine + glass
Dinner plate on table
Draw a simple shape of a house on a piece of paper. It will need to be fairly big (see step 3). Just a square with a slanted roof on top should do it. As simple or complex as you like! Feel free to get creative with colours here too.
On a separate sheet, brainstorm some words that describe what you need and want in a home.
Include physical attributes, but most importantly write down words about the kind of life you want to live inside the home. General words like creativity, harmony, beauty, and inspiration might come to mind. Other words might relate to activities you value, like an art studio, home cooking, gardening, and good neighbours. When it comes down to it, this is a list of values!
Now from this list choose ten words that best reflect the whole picture. When you have come up with your new list, write them down inside your dream house drawing.
Place your finished dream house drawing into a place you will return to often. It could be on an altar, or inside a journal. As long as it feels like an active and personal space. Return to it regularly for a week, and simply read the words.
Now comes the active visualisation! When you have a quiet half hour to yourself, take your paper, read it one more time, and then fold it up.
Find a comfortable position and sit or lie down. Close your eyes and take three deep, gentle breaths. Bring your awareness into your body and find a sense of stillness there.
Imagine yourself walking up a pathway and opening your own front door. Once inside, visualise yourself having realised each word on the list.
Make each word into an action that you can imagine yourself experiencing in the moment.
For instance, if you wrote down gardening, see yourself kneeling in the fresh dirt and planting your favourite flower. Feel every detail of it, including smells, tastes, and temperature.
If you wrote abundance, imagine yourself walking from room to room, feeling safe and secure with a healthy savings account and money flowing in regularly.
Finally, visualise yourself stepping outside onto the path once more.
Turn around and look at your dream house and invite every good thing that you haven’t thought of into your door.
Light a simple white candle and gently call upon Brigid, for she is the Goddess of Hearth, Home and Flame! Set a libation (bottle of wine) next to the candle, or possibly on your altar. An Image of Brigid on your altar can also be a beautiful and powerful thing too.
As you light the candle, say:
"Beloved Brigid, Beloved Goddess, Mistress of Hearth Home and Flame , I call on you."
Set the wine glass near the dinner plate with a candle. Open the wine and pour a glass. Say:
"Beloved Brigid, I lovingly offer you this libation.
"Radiant goddess, I humbly request that you help magnetise this home into our (my) life.
"By your powers of warmth, goodness and grace, please Beloved Brigid weave us to this home, swiftly, perfectly, and in a divine manner and way.
"Beloved Brigid, Beloved Goddess, Mistress of the Hearth, Home and Flame, we give thanks to you!”
If you’d like, pour yourself – and, optionally, any loved ones who will join you in the home – a glass of wine. Toast to Brigid and your new home (again, gratefully celebrating as if you’ve already found and purchased it), and drink.
Open your eyes and say, “And so it is.”
Divination & Responding to How The Candle Burns
In many magical traditions, candles are used for divinatory purposes. The two most commonly used methods of candle divination are reading the wax and the way that the candle actually burns.
To divine by the way the candle burns, you'll have to pay attention to whether the candle burns low or tall,
if it flickers, or it is calm,
if there's more than one flame.
Two flames could mean someone from the spirit world is joining you, to assist in your magic.
Even the colours found in the flame may give you a hint about the effectiveness of your spell.
I have had candles flicker in a very dynamic way... things are being worked through.
I even had a flame go out... I knew the magic was done.
Alternatively, if you want to divine by reading the candle wax, you'll need to drop the melted wax into a bowl of cold water. The wax will harden almost immediately and form shapes.
Use these shapes to get the answers to your questions, much as you would if you were reading tea leaves.
Enchanting Your Front Door
This spell is great to do on a Full Moon.. Full Moon Illumination...
Dress and charge your candle... become present.
Light your Candle with your quartz points facing in.
As you light your candle walk over to the inside of your front door,
place your hand on the door and
state three times:
"Upon this door, I lay this light,
That over this house and home it might,
Hold protection, day and night,
For this is my sacred rite"
"By the Power of 3 Times 3, this is my will so may it be..."
Again you could use your wand or crystal in a clockwise motion..
Once the candle is burned down the spell is done..
It's a lovely spell to perform during the Awakening Spring Full Moon... and
it's lovely to repeat once a year. You could go a step further and clean the door with salt water and rosemary herbs, a little crushed garlic in the bucket before the spell and even join the two spells together within a Moon cycle... and that is powerful magic!
Let it have meaning for you...
